City Council forks out €4m on personal injury claims in three years

Personal injury claims have cost the city almost €4 million over the past three years, the Galway City Tribune can reveal.

The huge outlay includes the cost of insurance cover for public areas, as well as paying the excess on claims.

It is understood many of the personal injury claims relate to injuries sustained in falls due to the city’s crooked cobbled pedestrian streets, which have fallen into disrepair.

Figures released to the Galway City Tribune following a Freedom of Information (FOI) request, reveal that the cost of public liability insurance totalled €3.4 million over the past three years.

The costs included €1.5 million in 2014; €1.4 million in 2015; and just short of a half a million euro in 2016.

In addition to paying for insurance cover, the City Council must pay the excess on personal injury claims.

This amounted to €142,000 in 2016; €242,000 in 2015; and €205,000 in 2014.

That means the total cost to the City Council was almost €4 million during that period.
