City Council calls for laws on prostitution
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway City Council has passed a motion condemning the trafficking and exploitation of women and girls in the city.
At a meeting of the City Council this week, Councillor Nuala Nolan proposed the motion that the Council recognises that laws against paying for prostitution must be introduced.
The motion was supported by most councillors and Councillor Nolan says such a call for legislation has been supported by local authorities in countries such as Sweden.
The Men’s Development Network has welcomed the motion and says Galway City council is now one of 20 local authorities to support the Turn Off the Red Light campaign.
Rebecca Beegan, Campaign Co-ordinator at the Men’s Development Network, says legislation must be changed if exploitation is to be tackled.
