A city community is to get tough on crime.

Two houses were broken into in broad daylight yesterday between 10.40am and 11a.m in Bohermore and a number of items such as jewellery were taken.

One of the houses was Liam Mellows Terrace, while the other was at Cookes Terrace.

It’s believed two well-dressed men were involved in the burglaries, but were disturbed by a resident at one of the houses.

Gardaí say the men fled the scene on foot and they’re investigating the break-ins, although no arrests have been made yet.

Meanwhile, a seminar on crime prevention took place at Flannery’s Hotel, Dublin Road last night, organised by Councillor Declan McDonnell.

The meeting, which was open to the public, was also attended by Gardaí and followed two similar meetings in other parts of the city in recent weeks.

Local Bohermore Councillor, Ollie Crowe, has scheduled a meeting with the Galway Garda Crime Prevention Officer, Sergeant Pat Flanagan for 3 o’ clock this afternoon.

Councillor Crowe told Galway Bay fm News that he intends to set up a scheme to combat crime in city centre area.
