City ‘chip & pin’ scam foiled

GARDAÍ and alert staff at a retail outlet on the west side of the city last week foiled an audacious plan by a con gang to access personal bank and credit card details of customers.

Staff at the store initially noticed a number of people acting suspiciously before Gardaí arrived at the scene – they arrested two suspects.

Detectives investigating the case now believe that the gang – made up of at least three people – had planned to replace a chip and pin machine at one of the check-outs with a similar looking device.

The ‘con’ would have involved distracting a staff member before another member of the gang would then ‘plug out’ the shop chip and pin machine, before replacing it with their own device.
