CITY BASED RED CROSS ORGANISER NAMED AS VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
Long-serving Red Cross organiser, Dominick Burke, has been named as Galway City Credit Union’s Volunteer of the Year.
The award was presented by City Mayor Terry O’Flaherty in recognition of his fifty years of dedicated service as a volunteer in Galway City.
The 10th Annual Mayor’s Awards took place last night in the Black Box Theatre.
Over 100 individuals and groups received certificates from the Mayor at the ceremony.
The St Anthony’s and Claddagh Credit Union Arts, Culture, Heritage and Cursai Gaelige Award went to Peter Connolly and the Claddagh Boatmen, in recognition of their committment to ensure that an iconic symbol of Galway life will remain into the future.
The St Columba’s Credit Union Residents’ and Local Areas Award was given to Sean Connell for his life-long committment to his environment and local community in Menlo.
Brendan Coffey received the Naomh Padraig Credit Union Social and Community Award for his fundraising activities and willingness to help people in all sections of society.
The Older Volunteer of the Year award went to Pat Conroy, for his committment and dedication to improving the quality of life for people in the Tirellan area.
Mary Arrigan-Langan got the Sports Volunteer of the Year Award in recognition of her dedication to bringing the benefits of swimming to people with physical disabilities.
The Children and Youth Award went to Nicola Corcoran for her vision and committment to working with and supporting young people in Renmore, and the Young Volunteer of the Year Award was given to David Finnerty, for ensuring that young people with intellectual difficulties have wider opportunities.
Each of the winners received a Galway Crystal trophy and a cheque for €700 for their hard work and volunteering efforts in 20-12.
