Date Published: 29-Nov-2012

Microbiological compliance in Galway city and county’s public water supply has now reached 100 percent.

That’s according to the latest report from the Environmental Protection Agency for 2011.

While there were no boil notices or water restriction notices for the city’s public water supply last year, in the county, three boil water notices remained active at the end of 2011 on the Letterfrack, Rosmuc and Tullycross areas.

The EPA issued two directions to Galway County Council last year.

Galway County Council is responsible for the operation of 35 Public Water Supplies serving a population of over 132 thousand.

Galway City Council is reponsible for the operation on one such supply serving a population of 75 thousand.

Nationally, the EPA says it’s concerned at the poor water quality in many of the country’s private wells.

Tests show levels of VTEC – a harmful strain of E.coli that could lead to kidney failure – have doubled in private wells, in the last year.
