Children prove the real stars

There were moments in the Galway Science and Technology Festival which only a child could bring to any event ….. like the young scientists from Killeeneen National School who were trying to explain to President Mary McAleese how the completion of an electrical circuit might be made on a circuit board which had been created from what looked like the lid of a shoebox.

In the tone of voice which eleven year olds sometimes adopt when they try to introduce a parent to some of the mysteries of the internet, or the delayed-record controls of a video recorder, they asked a somewhat bemused President what would happen when they touched two wires together.

She thought for a moment … no doubt wondering whether to be diplomatic and await an answer, or to give an answer.

The young scientists were more that adequate to the occasion.
