The student bar at NUIG has been granted planning permission to provide a canopy, despite opposition from a local rowing club.

The Corrib Rowing and Yachting Club opposed the development on the grounds that it would impede on their right-of-way.

Planning permission for the canopy at An Sult College Bar had been granted by Galway City Council, but that decision was appealed to An Bord Pleanála.

However, the Planning Appeals Board has since granted permission for the development on the grounds that it would not affect the visual amenities of the immediate area.

It would also not have an adverse impact on the adjoining canal or any property in the vicinity, the body ruled.

Planning was granted subject to six conditions being complied with – these included a requirement that a conservation expert be engaged to monitor works on the site.

This is to ensure that the integrity of the historic structures are maintained and that the existing structures are protected from unnecessary damage or loss of fabric.
