FOR some strange reason Western Hygiene Supplies Premier Division champions West United find themselves in an unusual place as they lie third from bottom of the table having accumulated just two
points from their opening four outings.
A shock 2-1 defeat away to newly promoted Colmanstown on Sunday just added to their early season woe as they struggle to make any sort of impact in the new campaign. Courtesy of strikes by Sean
and Kerill Hardiman, West found themselves two in arrears at the break and while they did pull one back through Mathias O’Malley, they never over extended the home side although the same player later threatened an equaliser but was thwarted by a smart Sean Mannion save.
After going through last season with just a single defeat, it is a bit of a culture shock to see the Claddagh based side struggle in the lower regions of the table.
Athenry are the new leaders, but they were given a bit of a fright by Mervue United. The home side were three up at the interval, but at the final whistle enjoyed just a slender 4-3 advantage. It was Paddy Quinn
who got their opener with Cathal Fahy and Paul Cullen extending their advantage.
