THE Galway senior camogie team handed hapless a hammering in the third round of the All-Irelande Championship at Kenny Park on Saturday. The Tribeswomen produced their most accomplished display of the title race so far and played with far greater fluency than in their previous games against Limerick and Offaly.

Even allowing for the limitations of their opponents, Galway were very impressive and played with a high level of quality in the first half in particular. Their accuracy, passing and link up play were much improved, and their general sharpness was at a higher level throughout the pitch.

It made for a difficult afternoon for Paul Donnelly’s Down team, who failed to register a score in the opening half. Playing against the wind, the Ulster side set up with Paula O’Hagan operating as a sweeper. However, once Galway clicked into gear, following Niamh Kilkenny’s opening point, the presence of the sweeper was irrelevant, as the home side’s passing and shooting accuracy saw them accelerate into the distance.

Galway made three changes to the starting fifteen from the side which defeated Offaly, with Rachael Hanniffy, Róisín Black and Rebecca Hennelly coming into the team. Kilkenny got the scoreboard ticking for the home side in the fifth minute. Ailish O’Reilly then pointed after an excellent team move, which began with Maria Cooney at centre back and saw Hennelly, Kilkenny, and Niamh Hanniffy transfer possession before O’Reilly finished it off with a point.
