Champions Wexford up first for Galway hurlers in Leinster

Galway's Padraic Mannion gets to the ball ahead of Wexford's Rory O'Connor during last year's Leinster hurling championship round-robin tie at Pearse Stadium.

GALWAY hurlers will likely have to overcome the province’s two traditional heavyweights if they are to claim a fourth Leinster championship this year.

The Tribesmen have been paired against title holders Wexford in the Leinster semi-final – a game scheduled for October 31/November 1 – with the winners advancing to a final date against either Kilkenny, Dublin or Laois.

The Midlanders, shock winners over the Dubs in 2019, will renew rivalry with Mattie Kenny’s charges in the Leinster quarter-final, but whichever team comes through they will then face a daunting semi-final against Kilkenny.

Should Galway fall in either the provincial semi-final or final, they will still have the opportunity of reviving their championship hopes through the qualifiers.

The GAA’s revamped inter-county schedule was revealed last Friday and it confirmed that Galway footballers will kick off their championship campaign away to Sligo in the Connacht semi-final on November 7/8.
