Champions put title on the line as they renew rivalry with Kilkenny
By Eanna O’Reilly
With the Galway senior camogie team on the brink of winning an historic second All-Ireland title in a row, Galway boss Cathal Murray is focused only on Saturday’s task against the Cats.
Any talk of two-in-a-row has not entered the Galway camp according to the manager, who is in no doubt that Kilkenny will provide his side with their toughest challenge yet.
“We have said absolutely nothing about it [the two-in-a-row] within the group. It hasn’t been mentioned by anyone. We have taken it game by game this year, we are fairly happy with our progress, but it’s all about performing now on Saturday evening.
“Kilkenny are going to be a step up from any team we’ve faced this year, there’s no doubt about that. They are unbeaten, like ourselves. They were outstanding against Cork [in the semi-final]. They’ve freshened up their team this year, they’ve added a few new faces and they look very strong. It’s going to be a huge task for us and we will really have to be at our best to beat them’’.
The Galway manager reported a clean bill of health within the squad, aside from long-term injury victim Lorraine Ryan, who picked up an Achilles tendon injury earlier this year. Carrie Dolan has recovered from the hand injury she sustained in the second-half against Tipperary and is available for selection. According to Murray, the management will spend the final days before the final considering their tactics for taking on the Cats.
“We’ve focused on getting ourselves right and training has gone well since the Tipp game. We will do a bit of thinking about our match-ups and the tactical side of things as well. But its only after we’ve decided on the starting 15 that we will do that. Everyone is training hard and they are all in with a chance of playing. It’s going to take a huge squad effort to win this on Saturday.”
