Champions power on as Monivea / Abbey stun Tuam Stars in quarter finals

CAN anyone beat Corofin? It’s a question that has been asked regularly over the past handful of seasons, and it was posed again this week after the county champions powered their way into the semi-finals of the 2017 Galway senior football championship.

The North Galway kingpins’ drive for five senior titles on the trot remains on track after they hit Moycullen for four goals to win last Sunday’s quarter-final on a scoreline of 4-13 to 2-8.

County forward Ian Burke went to town, scoring 2-3 from play, while Michael Farragher also bagged a brace of goals in the final quarter of the game, which perhaps exaggerated their dominance over Moycullen.

There are now only three teams left in the senior championship who can stop them: Annaghdown, Monivea/Abbey and Mountbellew/Moylough.

First up for Corofin in the semi-final is Annaghdown, who had 12-points to spare over Naomh Anna Leitir Móir in their quarter-final at Pearse Stadium last weekend.

Frankie Burke landed 2-6, with just three points of that total coming from placed balls, as Annaghdown blitzed the Connemara men, and signalled their intent that they won’t be pushovers in the last four.

Mountbellew/Moylough enjoyed a comfortable win over city club St James’ to set-up a semi-final clash with neighbours Monivea/Abbey on the weekend of September 24.

Paul Donnellan, Stephen Boyle and Joe Meehan goaled for Mountbellew/Moylough, helping them to a 3-20 to 0-10 victory.

Monivea/Abbey, newly promoted from intermediate ranks last season, caused a massive upset in Corofin and ensured it would be all North Board clubs in the last four.
