Cello set to take centre stage at Leisureland for unique concert
The cello will take centre stage in Leisureland next Wednesday, May 11, when Music for Galway’s Cellissimo Concerto Gala takes place, starting at 8pm.
It will feature the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, directed by David Brophy, with cellists Naomi Berrill, Adrian Mantu, Jakob Koranyi, and Laura van der Heijden.
This is a legacy event from Music for Galway’s programme for Galway 2020 celebrating the cello and the evening will be unusual in that it will feature three cello concertos – all very different – in one concert.
They are the world premiere of a new concerto by Gerald Barry, the Irish premiere of Wind in my Hair by Julia Wolfe, and Edward Elgar’s famous Cello Concerto.
Headford woman Naomi Berrill, who now lives in Florence, will open the evening with a special performance of Bill Whelan’s Fragments for solo cello and voice, This was also commissioned by Music for Galway for Cellissimo and Naomi performed it online last year.
The new cello concertos being performed next Wednesday were commissioned by Music for Galway and the Cello Biennale Amsterdam (CBA).
The first, Julia Wolfe’s Wind in my Hair, received its premiere at the CBA 2018 and its second performance is as part of Cellissimo. Swedish star cellist Jakob Koranyi, an avid environmental campaigner, is travelling green from Sweden to Galway to perform the piece.
