Cellist and DJ join forces for unique double bill
Innovative British cellist Matthew Barley will join forces with Galway DJ Cyril Briscoe next Thursday in Druid Theatre for an eclectic evening of music.
Matthew, whose music spans the genres from classical to electric, will be presenting his show, On the Road – the Cello Goes Electronic as part of Music for Galway’s Spring Season.
The show will form part of a joint event with DJ Cyril Briscoe of Galway Club Night, 110th Street, who is also a member of the Music for Galway board.
Cyril will spin music ranging from chamber to garage before and after Matthew’s performance.
Matthew’s programme will include works by Bach and Kodaly as well as exploratory pieces such as Giovanni Sollima’s collaborative Lamentatio for cello and electronics.
The highly-regarded cellist has performed in concert halls worldwide alongside the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic, the Melbourne and New Zealand Symphonies and the Kremerata Baltica.
This event at Druid will see Music for Galway introduce the Maroon Lounge – in the spirit of the Yellow Lounge in Berlin and London.
Matthew Barley believes in pushing musical boundaries via improvisation, community programmes and education. So, to mark his visit, the Galway Music Residency will present a workshop on Music Making and the World of Cello with Matthew. It will take place at The Cube, NUI Galway on Friday 6 February at 2pm. The event is geared towards young musicians, and second and third level students studying music and art, but all are welcome. The entrance fee is €5 but those presenting a ticket stub from the concert will be admitted free. Booking: 091 586706.
Doors for the Yellow Lounge event at Druid on Thursday next will open at 7.30pm and Matthew’s cello performance will begin at 8.30pm.
■ Tickets for this concert are €18 / €14 / €10 and are available from Music for Galway 091 705 962, or Opus 2, 4 High Street, or www.musicforgalway.ie and tht.ie
