The legacy of Monaghan poet Patrick Kavanagh will be celebrated this Saturday in the Galway Mechanics’ Institute, Middle Street, at 7pm.

Kavanagh Day will feature contributions from Waterford academic, Dr Michael Howlett, who has produced a thesis on the poet, who died in 1967.

Also taking part is Dr Des Kavanagh, the organiser of a 2014 tribute to Seamus Heaney in NUIG, who will speak on Kavanagh’s influence on Heaney.

Published poet and entertainer, Brian Dooley who, like Kavanagh is a native of Inishkeen, will also attend. There will be songs from local bass-baritone, Eamon Shevlin and music for the event will be provided by violinist, Íde Ní Fhaoláin.

This is the eight anniversary of Kavanagh Day, which is hosted by the Patrick Kavanagh Western Association (PKWA).

It’s a celebration of a poet who wrote in a vernacular style to highlight the value of ‘the common and the banal’, and who remains a hugely significant figure in literature.
