CITY TRIBUNE
Celebration of past and present at Traidphicnic
The popular annual Féile Traidphicnic, which normally takes place in the village of Spiddal, with the Burren in the background, will be held online this weekend, July 2-4. It’s the second year the community-based festival has been held online, as Covid restrictions remain in place.
Some of the top trad and folk names in the country are taking part in the 10th edition of Traidphicnic, including Clare Sands and Liam Ó Maonlaí, Erin McGeown, Seosamh Ó Neachtain, Mairéad Hurley, John Blake with Máire Ní Neachtain Becky Ní Éallaithe, Megan Nic Fhionnghaile, Orla Leavy, Plunkett Ó Tuathail and Cillian Mac Cába with Oisín Mac Diarmada
In addition, there’s a trip down memory lane, courtesy of Breda Hughes and John Conneely who recently hosted an afternoon in the renowned Tigh Hughes pub. The event involved the recording of a retrospective musical journey, spanning five decades of the Tigh Hughes sessions.
The recording features the people, music and stories that made this pub such an iconic venue – a place where music, culture, tradition and community combined to create a unique legacy.
Traidphicnic will also showcase a number of community projects. These include Sárchumhachtai / Superpowers with visual artist Nuala Ní Fhlathúin, Hup an Baile s’Againne, Random Acts of. . .; Seoda Áitiúla with Coláiste Chroí Mhuire gan Smál agus Coláiste Cholmcille; Tóit Chonán with Fighting Words Chonamara; and Traidmos with ATMOS Music Collective.
The local Cumann Drámaíochta Chlub Foghlaimeoirí Gaeilge Chois Fharraige will premiere a new drama, Pop-up Gaeltacht ar an bhFaiche Mór, written by Máirín Mhic Lochlainn.
