Celebration of Kenneth Webb
An exhibition marking the 60-year association between Connemara based artist Kenneth Webb and the Kenny Gallery is currently taking place in the city gallery and will run until August 8.
Kenneth Webb first walked into Kennys’ in High Street in 1953, marking the start of a happy working relationship built on trust and friendship on both sides.
In the 60 years since, his work has gone through several different phases. Art lovers have experienced his Forest of Dean pictures, his County Down farmhouses and harbours, thorn trees, tidewrack, the poppies of the 1960s, bog paintings, the water lilies of 80s and 90s and his recent images of his unique garden and the Marconi Bog.
What has not changed through the decade is his passion for painting and his use of colour. For him colour is an all embracing experience which pervades his work, and he constantly experiments with his own ideas and personal concepts, using colour in an expressionist manner.
Whatever the topic, his fresh approach to painting, especially in Connemara, makes him one of the most influential landscape painters in the country today. He finds his inspiration in Connemara, especially near Ballinaboy. Kenneth enjoys being isolated there and finds motivation in neglected bogs, leaves, stones, uncut grasses and the variety of colours in his own garden. He works in various styles but his internalised vision takes precedence over any objective representation.
The exhibition at the Kenny Gallery in Liosban comprises mostly new work but there is a retrospective element included.
It is open from 9am-5pm Monday to Saturday until August 8.
