CCTV schemes to be rolled out in county estates

CCTV is to be rolled out in housing estates in the county in a bid to improve community safety and the quality of life of residents.

The pilot programme will be implemented at Gort Bríde in Loughrea, Cullairbaun in Athenry and Bridge Court in Ahascragh.

These areas were chosen on the basis of difficulties being experienced and how CCTV could address the difficulties such as anti-social behaviour.

Some residents were concerned about the impact on privacy and data control and who would have access to the footage.

Alan Farrell from Galway County Council told a recent Joint Policing Committee meeting that the CCTV footage would be in a controlled room at County Hall.

He said that only designated officials and Gardaí would have access to the data, but that the contract for the supply, installation and maintenance of the cameras will be outsourced.
