Caulfield makes history with Irish Cup success

GALWAY city’s Adam Caulfield has become the the first Connacht water polo player to win an Irish Senior Cup championship medal. Uniquely, he also completed the double by winning a National League Division One championship medal in the same season.

In the Irish Senior Cup competition, St Vincent’s put in excellent team performances in the University of Limerick pool on the Saturday of the tournament, defeating reigning champions Half Moon 13-10, with Adam scoring two goals at key moments in the match to close out the opposition.

In the final, the team defeated Cathal Brugha of Belfast and he again contributed to the score sheet. Adam was also chosen on the Team of the Tournament (top seven players award) which was selected by the referees who officiated at the competition. It was the first time that St Vincent’s had made the final and also the first time to win the senior cup.

In the league, he played 12 national league Division One matches since Christmas and over the Easter weekend, St Vincent’s won out the top four league play-off to lift the league title, also for the first time in the club’s history.

Adam played with local side Corrib in the Division 2 League until the end of December and availed of the opportunity during the mid-season transfer window to move to Division One club St Vincent’s who are based in Dublin.

He is a member of the Senior and Junior National squads this season and in February captained the Irish Junior side in a Six Nations tournament in Poland and also played on the senior team that participated in a senior Six Nations competition in the Czech Republic in March.

Adam continues to study at NUIG where he is on the NUIG Sports Scholarship programme for elite athletes. He also captained NUIG to an intervarsity water polo championship victory in January this year.
