WHEN the final whistle blew at Eamonn Deacy Park on Friday night and Galway United had seen off Waterford FC by 1-0, it was a relief all round.

While a win over a fellow title challenger is important the next game is a new challenge and while all opposition set their own standards, this Friday’s contest at the Terryland venue (7.45pm) against Cobh Ramblers presents another opportunity for John Caulfield’s charges to maintain their promotion challenge.

With Airtricity First Division table toppers Cork City not in action this weekend, it is a chance for United to close the margin at the top to a point. The sides have met on two previous occasions this season, with United coming out on top on both occasions.

However, both were achieved in a contrasting manner. United had to rely on a Killian Brouder goal as they won by 1-0 on the Dyke Road, while matters were much more comfortable at the Cork venue where the Tribesmen were triumphant by 4-0, with Ed McCarthy (two), Max Hemmings and Manu Dimas notching the goals.

As far as Caulfield is concerned every team has to be given the same respect and consideration regardless of their standing in the league table. Speaking to Tribune Sport this week, he talked about how teams make it difficult for them at Eamonn Deacy Park.

“Look, we have to set our own standard in games and no matter who you play you have to give your own performance. We have to be creative and try to open them up as visiting teams are sitting deep and trying to frustrate you, and that is the challenge posed to us.

“Last week Waterford sat in and played on the break and Cork City did it previously. I don’t expect Cobh Ramblers to come and attack us, but they are just after appointing Shane Keegan as their new manager and no doubt he will give a lift to the team”.
