Caulfield apologises to fans for side’s display in the loss to Athone Town

Galway United manager John Caulfield has apologised to fans for his side’s performance last Friday night – and has vowed that it will never happen again.

United were run ragged in the opening half of what ended up as a 3-1 defeat to Athlone Town in Lissywoolen, a scoreline which flatters a visiting side that was so far off the pace in the first-half, their trip to the Midlands was in danger of being declared a non-essential journey.

The home side scored three times in a 14-minte spell in the first-half – and also hit the woodwork twice in the second-half – to leave United’s preseason hopes of challenging for the title looking like a laughable notion.

Every team can have a bad night, and top write-off their hopes of promotion based on one insipid half of play would be foolish in the extreme – one thing is for certain, they won’t be lacking focus, starting with tonight’s trip to Dublin to take on Cabinteely.

“It was a very bad night, very disappointing. Athlone deserved their win, all I can say to our supporters is we won’t have a performance, a 45 minutes, like that again,” said a determined Caulfield who, if not quite speaking through gritted teeth, was certainly measured in his words.

“We were probably exposed all over the park, we didn’t win the challenges. You come into every game it is a battle, every team wants to win, every team wants to be promoted, every team has invested, and it is a myth going around that some people think we are better than we are. We don’t.
