A novel online performance challenge, entitled Carpe Diem – Sing and Play: Remembering Eimear, will begin this Sunday, November 1, on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.  It will run for two weeks and is open to musicians of all levels.

Carpe Diem has become an annual event in memory of Eimear Noonan, an avid and inspirational young musician, who died tragically in France on November 8, 2017, aged 21-years. It’s gone online this year because of Covid-19.

This virtual challenge will continue the Carpe Diem tradition of supporting high-quality music education in the West of Ireland, as Ellie Farrell from the organising team explains.

Since the inaugural fundraiser in 2018, two sell-out Carpe Diem concerts, spearheaded by Katharina Baker and Fiona Buckley of Coole Music and Arts in Gort, have attracted huge audiences. They were treated to a wide mix of musical entertainment, spanning orchestral music, trad, rock, jazz, choral and folk.

Although a normal concert can’t take place this year, Eimear’s musical friends from across all genres and at all levels of proficiency want to be involved in any way they can. The result is this challenge.

The fundraiser is designed to bring fun and joy back into people’s lives, and aims to reach audiences throughout Ireland and the world, according to Ellie.  The aim is to evoke those magical nights when people were able to attend live performances, she explains.

“We’re certain those fabulous concert nights will return again but, in the meantime, a number of musicians will launch the campaign and then the rest, as they say, is up to you.”
