Cappataggle back in hurling big time

RARELY has a victory been greeted with such joyous enthusiasm. This five-point win by Cappataggle was celebrated loud and long by their loyal and passionate supporters after their Finnerty Plant Hire County Intermediate hurling semi-final success at Kenny Park, Athenry last Sunday won them a place in this year’s county final and puts them into next year’s senior championship.
It was a long cherished dream come true for the winners and their patient fans. None of this Cappataggle squad was born when the club last played at the top level away back in 1963 which makes this hard earned win over a gallant Annaghdown side all the sweeter.
No doubt, they would now love to round off the year with a victory over Killimordaly in the county decider and go up as champions.
The well-known cliché that goals win games was never better illustrated than in this game. Annaghdown fought tooth and nail to stay in touch with Cappie all through and were doing so with admirable determination until they were rocked by two green flags in a five-minute spell around the three-quarter stage and a killer third goal near the finish.
The young Annaghdown goalkeeper Michael Forde had no chance with any of the shots that beat him but would not have been happy at the way that county minor Alan Dolan and centre-forward Daniel Loughnane were allowed to get so close to goal after long solo runs before shooting, while sub Emmet Malone also had plenty of time to pick his spot for the third.
