Assistant director of nursing at UHG, Jean Kelly added that the building, which is due to be comissioned in early 2015, will improve the hospital’s ward and bed quality, as well as offer more privacy to patients.

It aims to address capacity issues at UHG, as well as begin the shift towards 100% single occupancy accomodation at the hospital.

CEO of the Galway Roscommon hospital group Bill Maher confirmed capital funding has been approved for the project.

City planners approved the application to build the new 75 bed ward in March.

It will be located between Block 2A and the maternity wing.

St. Rita’s single-storey ward and a number of temporary buildings will be demolished in the course of the development.
