Canning set to start for Tribesmen

TEENAGE sensation Joe Canning is poised to make his senior debut for Galway when the Tribesmen take on Cork in the Allianz NHL semi-final at the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick, on Sunday (3.30 p.m.).

The Portumna youngster joined Ger Loughnane’s squad for the first time two weeks ago and, it is understood, made a big impression in a challenge game between the panel members when he lined out at full forward at the weekend.

Together with Damien Hayes, Kevin Hayes, and Andrew Smith — each of whom impressed in Portumna’s march to the All-Ireland title — young Canning has suddenly given Loughnane and his management team some welcome selection headaches.

It is understood that he lined out alongside Damien Hayes and Ardrahan’s Iarla Tannian on the Galway full-forward line during the weekend workout.
