JOE Canning faces a race to be fit in time for Galway’s opening round of the Leinster hurling championship against Carlow at Pearse Stadium on Saturday evening, May 11.

The Galway talisman was stretchered off the field in the dying embers of last Sunday’s National League semi-final defeat (1-18 to 0-19) to Waterford at Nowlan Park.

Team manager Micheál Donoghue confirmed on Wednesday that Canning has sustained a groin injury, the seriousness of which is currently being assessed.

“Our thoughts after the game about the groin injury are still the same. He’s had a scan and we will know more later in the week. It’s obviously a big worry for us.”

Donoghue had better news on young defender Darren Morrissey who was also forced to retire injured. “He suffered damage to his AC joint in his shoulder, but should be ok in a couple of weeks.”
