Canadian folk trio De Temps Antan for Clifden show

French Canadian folk trio De Temps Antan, who have won fans across the globe with their interpretations of time-honoured melodies from Quebec, are performing at the Station House Theatre in Clifden, in conjunction with Clifden Arts Society on Friday, May 3.

Their Galway concert is part of a nine-venue Irish tour which will also take in the National Opera House in Wexford, St James’s Church in Dingle, the Fiddle Fair Marquee in Baltimore, County Cork, and the Sugar Cube in Dublin.

Driven by the stomping ‘tac-tic-a-tac’ of a type of clog known as ‘les pieds’ their rough-hewn sound mixes boundless energy with the ‘joie de vivre’ of traditional Quebecois music.

De Temps Antan’s singers Éric Beaudry, David Boulanger and Pierre-Luc Dupuis have previously been members of La Bottine Souriante, arguably the most influential Quebecois band of modern times, who played Galway City’s Black Box Theatre many moons ago.

In De Temps Antan, their powerful vocals are backed by David Boulanger’s fiddle-playing, with Dupuis on accordion, harmonica and Jews-harp, while guitar accompaniment is provided by Éric Beaudry, who also plays mandolin and bouzouki.

The Guardian described them as ‘world-class performers’ while Folkworld stated that they had “enough power to drive a nuclear furnace”.
