CAMPAIGNERS CANDLE-LIT VIGIL AT TOGHERMORE
Date Published: 05-Jan-2013
A candle-lit vigil is to be held at Toghermore Residential House in Tuam this afternoon (Sat Jan 5th).
It’s in solidarity with residents and staff at the facility who have been campaigning against a feared closure later this month.
The feared winding down of the 18 bed residential facility followed an independent fire and safety report delivered to the HSE last month (Dec), which revealed fire safety shortfalls.
16 residents were to be transferred to alternative accommodation on a phased basis with all expected to be moved by the middle of this month.
No other mental health services at the Toghermore complex are impacted by the report.
Since then, there are now strong hopes that the residential house can be saved from closure following a pledge of funding.
Tuam and District Mental Health Association has offered funding in the region of 60 thousand euro towards required fire safety works.
The vigil in support of the facility’s ongoing operation gets underway at 4.30 this afternoon.
John Feely of the Tuam and District Mental Health Association says it’s a show of solidarity:
