Campaign ends in success as drinking water flows through the taps
Almost half a century of campaigning for an East Galway village has finally reaped reward – with works expected to commence over the coming weeks on a public water supply.
It brings the curtain down on years of false hopes and promises – but now the contracts have been signed to deliver running water to Kilrickle, bringing to an era when householders had to rely on tanks and rainwater for their supply.
The village will now be attached to the neighbouring Cappataggle Group Water Scheme as part of a €4.5 million initiative being undertaken by Galway County Council in association with Irish Water.
That funding that has been approved will provide for an extension from the existing Cappataggle Group Water Scheme to serve dwellings in Kilrickle and the neighboring village of Kilcooley.
The plan is to connect almost 250 households to the scheme, with the last remaining dwellings yet to confirm their commitment to the modest €1,600 sign-up fee.
Local publican and staunch campaigner Dessie O’Brien told The Connacht Tribune this week that it was a long and often wearisome campaign, but he was delighted that there was an end in sight.
“It’s a long time coming, but now that it has come it is brilliant,” he said.
