The chairperson of Galways Joint Policing Committee is urging a revival of community alert schemes to ensure elderly people feel safe in their homes.

A national confidential helpline for older people is reporting a 50 percent rise in calls in the first five months of the year compared to the same time last year.

Third Age, which run the Senior helpline, also says it constantly hears from the lonely and the isolated.

Peter Roche says it’s important to re-energise community alert schemes across Galway
