CALLS FOR FURTHER INDUSTRIAL ZONING IN ATHENRY
Date Published: 23-Apr-2012
Further industrial zoning is needed in Athenry to allow the sensible development of the town.
That’s the view of local Councillor Peter Feeney who was speaking following the circulation of the manager’s report on the draft local area plan.
28 submissions were received by the local authority on the plan which was presented at a meeting of the council [Apr 23].
These include observations from the National Roads Authority, the IDA, Teagasc, the Department of Education and Skills and various other interested parties and bodies.
Cllr Feeney says the last plan zoned a very small amount of industrial land in Athenry which restricted its potential for industrial development.
He says IDA investment, public transport and road infrastructure now means that the town is an attractive location for industry.
The amended report proposed by Cllr Feeney and seconded by Cllr Bridie Willers will now be assessed and will later be put on public display.
Speaking to Galway Bay fm news, Cllr Feeney says that with the right balance of industrial zoning, Athenry is poised to be an economic driver for the East of the county.
