A Galway West TD is calling for two airstrips in West Connemara to be opened for the use of private aircraft.

Éamon Ó Cuív says opening the airstrips at Cleggan and Inishbofin would ensure the resources could be used by visitors.

The Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has already spent almost 10 million euro on constructing two airstrips at Cleggan and Inishbofin.

A company was appointed in February 2011 to prepare the tender documents for the construction phase of the terminals.

The Fianna Fail TD is now calling on the Department of Arts, heritage and the Gaeltacht to urge consultants to expedite these documents, so the projects can go to tender.

In the interim, he wants the Department to ensure that a licence is sought for the use of the airstrips from the Irish aviation authority for the use of private aircraft.

His understanding is that in this case there is no requirement for terminals to be built and would help tourism on the Island.
