A proposal is being put forward that could see the upgrade of piping in homes in the city, due to lead contamination, paid for by the City Council.

The lead contamination crisis erupted in the city late last year, when high levels of lead were detected in Old Mervue, Shantalla, Bohermore, the Claddagh and other areas.

Councillors have continously asked the Council to provide householders with funds to upgrade their homes, which would cost in the region of 1 thousand euro per house.

Mayor of Galway Decalan McDonnell and Councillors Brian Walsh and Terry O’ Flaherty have put forward a motion for this evening’s council meeting that funds from the new ‘second home levy’, go towards the upgrade of the pipes.
