Call to tackle class sizes in Galway national schools
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Over 17 percent of city primary school pupils and 24 percent of those in the county are in class sizes of 30 or more.
New figures published by the Department of Education show that 7178 national school pupils are now in mainstream education in the city spread over 316 classes.
In the county, there are 21 thousand 215 pupils spread over 914 classes.
More than 6,200 pupils in Galway are in classes of 30 or more.
Nationally, the data shows almost a third of Irish school pupils are in now ‘supersize’ classes of over 30 children.
Peter Mullen, from primary teachers’ union, the INTO, says smaller communities are also running into difficulty.
