CALL FOR SUPPORT FOR GRID WEST PROJECT
Date Published: 05-Mar-2013
A dramatically enhanced electricity system is crucial for the future development of the west of Ireland.
That’s according to the Council for the West, which is calling on local communities and landowners to support the proposed Grid West project.
The Grid West project is Eirgird’s plan to develop and upgrade the electricity transmission network from now until 20-25.
The project will initially consist of a new high capacity power line linking Bellacorick, Mayo to a strong point on the transmission grid.
It’s envisaged that, in time, the project will involve two high capacity power lines from Bellacorrick, Mayo to both Cashla in Galway and Flagford in Roscommon.
The investment is worth around 240 million, and the plan is now at consultation level.
Eirgrid are holding open days on the project in Galway – the first in Athenry at the Raheen woods this Thursday and the second in Flannery’s hotel in the city on Friday. (7 and 8 March)
Chairman of the Council for the West Sean Hannick says the project is badly needed to develop the western region
