Call for revamp of TB scheme

A BETTER compensation package and a far quicker valuation appeals mechanism are badly needed improvements to the TB Eradication Scheme, according to Galway IFA Animal Health Committee Rep., Stephen Canavan.

He urged cattle farmers in Galway to attend a special regional meeting tonight (Thursday, Nov. 8, 8pm) in the Lady Gregory Hotel, Gort, that will address issues relating to TB eradication.

The meeting has been arranged by the IFA in conjunction with the Dept. of Agriculture and will be attended by a number of senior officials from the Department.

“This will give farmers the chance to express their views on the current scheme and to seek improvements in the programme.

“It will also give farmers the chance to hear at first-hand the Department’s plans and proposals for the TB Eradication programme over the coming years,” said Stephen Canavan.

According to Stephen Canavan, while Galway – on 2% of herds affected by TB was lower than the national average – there were concerns around certain pockets of the county that had higher rates of the disease.

Concerns had been expressed in parts of the North Clare and South Galway areas where there appeared to have been issues relating to the disruption of wildlife habitats due to major road/infrastructural projects.

“Farmers feel very strongly that there needs to be more flexibility shown in the valuation process of reactors and that the hardship grant needs to be upgraded.
