Call for Portiuncula Hospital to become maternity centre of excellence

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Government T.D. is calling for Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe to become a centre of excellence for maternity services.
The call from Deputy Paul Connaughton, comes as the Minister for Health faces pressure to reveal the terms of reference for a national review of maternity services.
The West/North-West Hospital Group has shelved a controversial review of services in the area.
It follows the resignation of the Group chairman after it emerged he had a stake in the consultancy firm that carried out the review of maternity services in the region.
Maternity services in HSE West/North-West will now be subject to the national review already underway by the HSE and Dept of Health.
Speaking on Galway Talks, Galway East T.D, Paul Connaughton wants the Minister for Health to deem Portiuncula Hospital as a centre of excellence.
