Call for new approach to maintaining local roads across Galway

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Tuam Councillor has called for a new approach to managing the maintenance of hedges and verges across rural Galway roads.
Independent Cllr Michael Fitzmaurice has proposed that the local authority investigates the possibility of bringing up to 200 FAS workers on board to manage the workload.
He told this week’s municipal district meeting that the resources are not there to pursue other options while the moratorium on staff remains.
His comments came as members were advised of an additional allocation of over 160 thousand euro towards road projects in Tuam.
Cllr Fitzmaurice said rural roads have been neglected since the moratorium on staffing as Area Engineers have no resources.
He argued that training FAS workers would also arm them for future employment and make our rural roads safer for motorists and pedestrians.
