Galway City Tribune – A local councillor has called for a multi-agency approach to tackle what she called ‘out of control’ drinking among students in the city.

Cllr Colette Connolly said the time has come for Gardaí, Galway City Council and the third level institutes to join forces in rooting out the cause for excess alcohol consumption.

“One has to examine and have an open debate about why our young people, with their whole lives ahead of them, in education, independent and doing their studies, why they must drink a bottle of vodka before they leave the house,” said the independent councillor.

“If students are so happy with their lives, if they’re so content and self-confident, why are they drinking to excess?” she asked.

Cllr Connolly said she is not interested in restricting people or making people’s decisions for them but believed it was an issue that those who are not equipped to make informed decisions could access dangerous amounts of alcohol with relative ease.
