Call for greater resources following NUIG midwife care study
Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Master of Dublin’s Rotunda Hospital says maternity units in Ireland have too few resources to practice mid-wife led care.
His comments come as a new study led by NUI Galway has found that women who receive continuous care from midwives through pregnancy and birth fare better than those who are cared for by a team of obstetricians, GPs and midwives.
The systematic review is published in The Cochrane Library and involved a partnership with three UK universities.
However, the Rotunda’s Dr Sam Coulter-Smith says his main concern is that staffing levels in maternity hospital are half of what they should be.
