Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway County Council is to call on the Department of the Environment to provide funding for a fire station in South Connemara.

It follows a motion raised by Cllr Seosamh O’Cuaig at this week’s meeting of the local authority where members received a presentation on the future provision of fire services for the Western Environs.

The appraisal found that there is not a conclusive case for an additional fire station in area, however it noted that residual risk remains.

Members also heard that the fire service in the city needs to be expanded as it is physically too small and in the wrong side of the city.

Out of all three notional station grounds, the group noted that An Cheathru Rua would be a preferred location in terms of population covered within a 20 minute travel time.

Cllr Eileen Mannion said it was shocking that there was not a conclusive case for an additional fire station in South Connemara.
