Galway Bay fm newsroom – Former Mayor of Tuam, Cllr Tom Reilly is calling for a directly-elected Mayor for the town and for Ballinasloe and Loughrea which will lose their town councils from next month.

He told this week’s meeting of the town council that Tuam, and other towns such as Ballinasloe and Loughrea which are also losing their town boards should have directly elected Mayors.

Cllr Reilly wants Minister Phil Hogan to introduce legislation for the direct election of mayors in all towns where town boards were axed.

His proposal was seconded at this week meeting of Tuam Town Council by his Fianna Fail colleague Cllr Eamon Kitt.

It was also agreed that the motion be circulated to the town boards in Ballinasloe and Loughrea.
