The HSE is being called upon to provide a clear statement on the long-term plans for the residential unit at Toghermore House in Tuam.

Tuam Area Cllr Sean Canney says a recent response he received from the HSE says that it’s still not in a position to give assurances in relation to the future of new admissions due to health and safety concerns.

A decision was made last December to wind down Toghermore residential facility after a report revealed fire safety shortfalls.

In January, funding was sanctioned to address immediate fire safety issues at the 18 bed facility which has enabled the existing residents to stay there.

A meeting that had been scheduled between HSE management and Oireachtas members mid last month where the issue was on the agenda was deferred and is now being rescheduled.

The HSE has to date stated that all other mental health services at the Toghermore complex including day hospital, day centre and child and adolescent services will continue to run as normal.
