CALL FOR AUGHRIM BATTLE SITE TO BE DEVELOPED ON INTERNATIONAL SCALE

Minister Eamon O’Cuiv is calling for the Battle of Aughrim site in Ballinasloe to be developed into an iconic place of interest for tourists

The 1691 battle was fought between the Jacobites and the forces of William the third

An interpretative centre was built at the site in the 1990’s, but Minister O’Cuiv feels the area has more potential as a European tourist attraction

He wants the local LEADER company, the local authorities and the relevant state agencies to work together and draw up a long term plan

Minister O’Cuiv says the battle of Aughrim was a very pivotal one and so has a lot of unexplored potential
