Bypass route to be unveiled in a fortnight

D-Day for the unveiling of the emerging preferred route of the proposed new city bypass is fast approaching.

Planners are putting the final touches to the preferred route of the N6 Transport Project, which, when made public, is expected to be an amalgam of several of the six colour-coded corridor options announced in February.

Galway County Council has confirmed that the emerging preferred route is on course to be published on the week beginning April 20.

Senior Engineer, Michael Timmins, said that landowners and property owners affected by the route selected will be notified first.

As of now, the plan is that letters will be posted to those affected on Wednesday or Thursday April 22 and 23. Then on Thursday April 23 or Friday April 24, Galway City Councillors and Galway County Councillors will be briefed. A media briefing will be held the same day as elected members are consulted.

“Unless something happens between now and then, and that we haven’t fully finalised the route, we should be in a position to publish the emerging preferred route in the week ending April 24. As a matter of courtesy, landowners will be informed first, and it is important that they are told first, and then we will brief councillors and the media on the same day, a day or two after landowners receive letters,” said Mr Timmins.
