Galway Bay fm newsroom – Businesses operating in the Eyre Square Centre have lodged appeals with An Bord Pleanala over plans for the building.

It follows the city council’s decision to allow a new 3 storey entrance be built between Ball Alley Lane and number 19 Eyre square.

Last month, joint receivers for Shancar, Michael McAteer and Paul McCann, were granted permission with conditions to develop the Eyre Square centre.

The plan involves building a new 3 storey high entrance to accomodate 5 retail units as well as a cafe/restaurant.

However, this will involve the demolition of the existing entrance at Eyre Square and includes the former Bureau de Change adjacent to number 19 Eyre Sqaure.

Two businesses operating in the Eyre Square Centre have now lodged appeals to the Higher planning authority.

Owner of The Swamp, Antoinette Kelly, says that loss of footfall due to construction for a period of 6 months will lead to significant losses in revenue.

She also claims that no details have been provided with the application in relation to the provision of access from Eyre Square during the construction phase.

Meanwhile, the owner of Sails Cafe, Anne Daly claims that the store room is located within the area of the proposed development.

An Bord Pleanala will assess the appeals and is due to make a decision in February.
