Local business owners are taking action to make Galway a ‘heart safe’ city.

Supported by Croi cardiac foundation, a survey is currently being carried out by businesses to log the number of defibrillators in the city, where they are located and whether staff have the knowledge to use the machines.

This follows one cardiac related death in Quay Street and two in Eyre Square last year.

Along with fund raising, Galway business owners will purchase extra machines and provide the necessary training to make the city centre ‘heart safe.’

Results of the survey will be published in September and business owner Councilor Niall Mc Nelis says having a defibrillator close by greatly increases chances of survival.
