Burke and Niland lead way in another easy Galway win
Galway 3-22
Dublin 0-13
John McIntyre in Tullamore
THE Galway minor hurlers continue to leave a trail of destruction in their wake – Dublin becoming the latest victims in a hopelessly one-sided Leinster semi-final in Tullamore on Monday.
After big wins over Antrim, Laois and Kilkenny, this latest talented minor team from the west were expected to encounter few problems against the Dubs and that’s how it transpired in a game in which the outcome was decided with indecent haste.
Team manager Fergal Healy could have rocked up to O’Connor Park with his armchair, a pipe and a newspaper – hopefully, the Connacht Tribune – and not a hair would have been turned on his head by the on-field action.
Galway were that superior; that much in control. With star performers in midfielder Michael Burke and the ridiculously classy Aaron Niland, Galway quickly took an iron grip on the exchanges in setting up a provincial showdown with Kilkenny next week.
After only nine minutes, they were 1-4 to 0-1 in front; after 15 minutes, the lead had been stretched to 1-9 to 0-2; after 24 minutes, Galway were already home and hosed having gone 2-12 to 0-3 clear. By the interval, they had amassed a total of 2-16 to just three points in reply.
Understandably, Galway couldn’t maintain that level of quality, especially as the team management began to withdraw some of their more influential performers. It was hardly a mercy gesture either, more a case of not over-stretching individuals just back from injury and having a look at other members of the squad.
