THE Bish were crowned All-Ireland Second Year ‘A’ Basketball Champions last Sunday afternoon following a pulsating final at the University of Limerick Arena.

Having defeated Calasanctius College, Oranmore by nine points in the semi-final following earlier wins over Colaiste Choilm (Ballincollig), Scoil Dara (Kilcock) and Christian Brothers College (Cork), the Bish faced St. Fintans in the final.

The Galway boys opened the scoring against the Dublin school with several baskets from Patrick Lyons, Cathal Evans and Peter Cooke as a result of good Bish defending, fast breaks and turnovers.

Steven O’Brien was in excellent form as well for the Bish with his outside three point shooting throughout the tournament. Seamus Garrity played great defence and controlled the point position in the second quarter, working effectively with Bish post player Pamele Ogundele, who controlled the defensive boards.

Conall Morgan and Sean Candon distributed the ball to free up shooters and both players scored some fine baskets when open from baseline moves. St. Fintan’s Conor McGaren used his 6’3’’ frame to full effect under the boards and Colin Kelly, who scored nine points, kept them in the game. The first half finished with a nine point lead for the Bish.
